Red Square is the heart of the city. It's bounded by the Kremlin walls, St.Basil's Cathedral, the Historical Museum and the GUM Department Store. From the time of Ivan the Great the square was used as a huge gathering place for public events, markets and fairs. Today national celebrations and huge military parades are still held here. Red Square's most famous and eye-catching structure is St.Basil's Cathedral built from 1555 to 1561 by the order of Ivan the Terrible. According to legend, Ivan the Terrible had the two architects, Postnic and Barma, blinded so they could never again create such a beautiful church.
