Metro is one of the cheapest and quickest ways of getting around Moscow. Constuction of Metro began in 1931 under Stalin. Many Soviet and foreign architects and engineers spent four years building the deep stations and decorating them with mosaics, marble, stained glass, statues and chandeliers. The first line was opened in May 1935. Now there are 10 major lines and 163 stations connecting all points of the city (in contrast, St.Petersburg has 58 stations on four lines); over 10 million peple use the Metro daily.
